What is a Target Keyword?
The Target Keyword is the search term your page's fixes are aimed at. SpyFu picks one for each page based on what that page already ranks for, then uses it to write the title, meta description, H1, and social tags as a set.
You can keep the recommendation or replace it with any keyword you choose.
Who picked this keyword for my page?
SpyFu recommended it based on your own ranking data — specifically, the keywords that page is already showing up for in search results. The recommendation is a starting point, not a permanent assignment. You're the editor.
Why doesn't my page have a recommended keyword?
SpyFu's recommendations come from keywords a page already ranks for. If a page doesn't rank for any tracked keyword, there's no data to base a recommendation on. In that case, you set the target yourself: type in the keyword you want that page to go after, and SpyFu will generate fixes aimed at it.
Can I change the keyword SpyFu picked?
Yes, any time. Click the keyword field for that page, type your preferred term, and assign it. The page's fixes will re-aim to match. If fixes have already been generated, you'll regenerate them using one AI credit to get a new set built on the updated target.
Does assigning a keyword change my live site?
No. Assigning a Target Keyword only sets the target for that page's fixes — it doesn't touch your site. Nothing goes live until you publish a fix.
What if I pick the wrong keyword?
Change it any time — there's no lock-in. If you've already generated fixes with the old target and want a new set, regenerating uses one AI credit.
What do "Position" and "Volume" mean next to keyword suggestions?
Position is where your page currently ranks in search results for that keyword — lower numbers are better. Volume is how many times that keyword is searched per month. Together they help you gauge whether a keyword is worth targeting: a page already ranking at position 8 for a high-volume term is a good candidate for a fix.
Does SpyFu pull keywords from Google Search Console?
No. SpyFu uses its own search data — the keywords and rankings it tracks independently. GSC is not connected to Site Audit.
Can I set a Target Keyword that isn't ranking yet?
Yes. You can type in any keyword you want to target, even one your page doesn't currently rank for. SpyFu will write fixes aimed at that term. Keep in mind that new targets without existing ranking history don't come with position or volume data from SpyFu's index.
